Adjust development and delivery practice
Last updated: September 29, 2026
When the constraint is practice, or enforcement runs in the wrong place, the fix lives with the teams rather than the rules. Policy changes make the pipeline stricter. Practice changes make the failures stop arriving.
Run checks before the pipeline does
A policy check costs least when it fails on the developer’s own machine. Running liquibase checks run against the changelog before pushing surfaces the same findings the pipeline would block on, minutes earlier and without spending a build. Teams that make this a habit stop being surprised by the pipeline’s checks. See Run checks with a policy assignment.
Keep changes small and reversible
Small changesets. A changeset that does one thing produces findings that point at one thing, deploys that fail for one reason, and rollbacks that take back exactly what broke.
Rollback readiness. Automatic rollbacks cover many modeled changes, and SQL changelogs need explicit rollback blocks. A team that has tested its rollback path has two recovery options during an incident instead of one.
A branching strategy the pipeline matches. Changelog structure and branching should agree, so a change flows from branch to deployment without manual reassembly.
Make your operations measurable
Delivery measurements are only as good as the operations your teams report, and two habits do most of the work:
Assign an environment to every database connection. Cycle Time counts only deployments on connections that have one, and the environment badge makes every operations view easier to triage. See Measure deployment performance.
Register changelogs and connections, and set identifiers everywhere Liquibase runs. An unattributed operation is invisible to the project filters your reviews depend on, so it silently drops out of every comparison.
Close the loop
Practice changes are habits, and a habit can lapse without anyone noticing. After one, watch the same signals that motivated it: The check’s violation counts on the Policy Checks dashboard, and Change Failure Rate on the Database Changes dashboard. If neither moves within a cycle or two, the constraint was somewhere else. See Verify the effect on the next measurement cycle.
