Manage owners
Last updated: September 29, 2026
Choose who owns a project, connection, or changelog. Owners can view, edit, archive, restore, and delete the item, and add or remove its other owners.
Before you begin
You can manage the owners of anything you own. To change the owners of something you do not own, you must be a member of the Administrators group. The account that set up the server is a member.
Procedure
Open the owners for an item
Go to Projects, Database Connections, or Changelogs in the sidebar, and select the item you want to change to open its page. On a project, select the Access tab. On a connection or changelog, open the Access dropdown.
The Owners section lists everyone who owns the item and whether each owner is a user or a group.
Select Manage owners to open the dialog where you add and remove them.

Add an owner
Under Add owners, search for a person or a group by name or email address. Select the check box beside each one you want, and the counter above the list keeps count as you go. Select Add owners to save them.
Anyone who already owns the item is left out of the results, so the list only offers people and groups that adding would actually change.
Note: You can make any user or group an owner, including a group you do not belong to yourself.

Remove an owner
Select Manage owners to open the dialog. Under Current owners, select Remove on the row you want to take off. When you are finished, select Done.
An item cannot be left without an owner. When one owner remains, Remove is unavailable until you add another, so the way to hand an item over is to add the new owner first and then remove the old one.

Hand off what a departing user owns
A user who is the only owner of something cannot be deactivated, because it would leave those items with no active owner. Open the user from Users & Access, select Deactivate, and then select Deactivate again to confirm. If they solely own anything, the dialog changes to Cannot deactivate and lists those items.
Choose a new owner for each item from its Transfer to… list, and use the search box above the list to narrow the candidates. Once every item has a new owner, select Transfer and deactivate.
Note: Groups are blocked the same way. A group that solely owns something asks you to transfer those items before it can be deleted.
